Game Informer

Game Informer ISSN: 1067-6392, Published by GameStop Corporation

Summary: Game Informer is a video game magazine that features articles, reviews, game tips and news about video games, game consoles and more for the avid game player.  It was created in 1991 and at the end of 2011 it was listed as the number 4 most circulated magazine according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Critical Evaluation

Initially I thought this magazine was going to be geared mainly towards providing gaming tips but it offers so much more and I can see why teenagers, particularly teenage boys, would flock to this magazine.  At times it almost seems written in its own language created for the gamer with articles about MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing game), MMOs (massively multi-player online games) and PvE games (player vs. environment games).  The issue I examined weighed in at a hefty 136 pages of interviews, information about upcoming technologies such as the PS4 and the next generation of XBOX, reviews of games and gift suggestions for the avid gamer that included book suggestions, movie suggestions and more.  The articles are well written and designed to appeal to the avid game player.

Challenge Issues

Some may argue about the violence of the games portrayed in the magazine but the magazine seems to be careful to avoid showing the more graphic images from the games.  The games themselves have ratings similar to movie ratings to guide customers on the appropriate age levels.

Why did I include this magazine?

Game playing is very popular among teens, especially males and this magazine was listed as one of the top gamer magazines.
